Not on your Nelly Ever Again

May I be a bit controversial? They (araucanas)are very pretty - but they don't look like "proper" chickens to me so why should they lay eggs?! I've not been on here for long, but as people have mentioned different breeds I've been looking them up - and I just don't get the fascination for for the funny shapes and sizes. I like the look of Sussexes and Dorkings - things that look as if they have the common sense to lay eggs in a proper chickeny way - like our GNR and PP ! I get the fluffy knickers thing - but I think that our GNR has just enough fluff to look fun and sufficiently saucy!

I know what you mean by not quite getting it for chooks that 'don't look like proper chickens'. When I started out I so wanted 'chickens like my Granny had' but my OH would only entertain the notion of chickens that were small and had fluffy feet as he (wrongly as it turned out) thought that hens like that would not damage the garden. Hence the arrival of 3 identical partridge Pekins who promptly bulldozed their way over all our perennials  They were sweet but I still hankered after chickens that were, well, brown hens. Finally my OH and I came to a compromise and I got some brown (well gold) non banty Silkies who were bigger than the Pekins, made hen noises rather than guinea pig noises but still had the required feathery feet and were still smaller than 'proper hens'.

One day I'm gonna get me a big brown girly.

(The little Pekins, by the way, went to live with my best friend who just loves them).

Most of my polands are very sensible and dignified with their haircuts, but one (gladys) seems to relish getting it as wet and muddy as possible!! :D She regularly has to have a wash. Love them though and wouldn't be without them.

I'd be reluctant to have another Welsummer as mine is super noisy!!
