Bantams in (or near) Oxfordshire

Recommended Posts

Hi all

We have a (cube green) and GNRPP(white chicken) and now my other half wants some bantams. I believe that bantams have fluffy feet and don't damage the ground as much - she wants them for the beauty and fuffy feet anyway - i want them for their !eggbrown!

I have made some searches on the www and can't find any localish suppliers of them.

Does anyone know where to get Bantams near to Oxford?

Thanks in advance! :D

Hello

Not all bantams have fluffy feet.

It's best not to mix them with your large fowl - sorry

There are plenty available, probably bets to do some research, find some breeds that you like, get some alternative housing for them, then go through the ads in the back of Practical Poultry Magazine and see if you can source some near you - you'll need to be prepared to travel though.

I'd wait until the poultry shows start up again later in the year, go to them and do a bit of window shopping and pick up a few contacts.

When I was frist looking for banties in Oxfordshire last year I had difficulty too and ended up travelling up to Birmingham and down to Portsmouth. However I know a little bit more now. Claret's advice of looking in Practical Poultry Magazine is good. Not only will they have individual ads but they will also advertise places that have lots of different breeds together. These places would be good to go to as you can see what types take your fancy.

I'm not sure where in Oxfordshire you are but Notcutts near Wallingford, have some Silkies at the moment, or if you are interesed in Frizzles, PM me and I can give you the name of the lady where I got mine (she shows Frizzles), or look on the notice boards of places like Blakes (animal food place near Brightwell Cum Sotwell) or Hunts (horse provisions place near Wallingford). Last summer they had ads for lots of Pekins. It might be a bit early in the year however for that.

I would however caution that I don't think any of these little breeds would go particularly well with large fowl, as Claret says. :anxious:

I so did not intend to run my bantams and hybrids together - but they had other ideas and I now have an empty !gored! while the whole flock FRs together and cuddles up in the (cube blue) at bedtime. It works, I think, because the little Belgian banties started by roosting on the division between nesting and roosting bits of the cube so the big girls didn't notice they were there until they were all good friends.

It means, though, that I shall have to keep my faverolles in the !gored! when they arrive, as I really REALLY can't fit in any more in the cube run and none of the bantams seems willing to compromise and return to the go. Honestly, chickens!

Shame really - it's a nice little set up!

Thanks all for feedback and help! I had a few PM's and found someone near(ish) to me with some Pekin Bantams. I will go take a look in a week or so...

Seems a bit of controversy as to if hybrids and bantams can be kept together. I need to keep them together but anticipate a little bullying initially as they sort the pecking order. I do have a (orange eglu) in can keep the Bantams in seperately if initially needed. Long term them need to be together with 3 hybrids in the (cube green)
