Unwell Hen .. any advice?*Sad Update*

Recommended Posts

My 2.5 year old GNR is unwell. On Saturday she was sitting in the nest box and I thought she was broody, making chirping noises, Sunday she was out and about but did keep sitting down, Monday she was not moving around much, sitting or standing with eyes closed and had stopped eating but was drinking. We found clear runny liquid in the nest box and her knickers have bright yellow I guess poo on them. Today she is still refusing all treats and not moving about sitting hunched up.

Going to take her to the vets at lunchtime, any ideas what this could be? :(

One of my girls had something recently which sounds very similar to your description so my guess would be she's laid the inside of an egg but not the shell, which in our case, was stuck inside her. The vet managed to remove it and she perked up and was back to normal the next day. If this is the case for you, it might be worth upping her calcium to help with the soft shells (limestone flour and cod liver oil mixed into a wet mash or try one of the liquid calcium supplements which go into their drinking water ie. Zolcal D).

Hope she's ok and the vet manages to sort her out for you.

Visited the vet yesterday who checked for broken shell stuck inside but no signs. She gave us Baytrill but Edna did not improve over the next 24 hours and in fact got worse. This morning she couldn't stand and was struggling with her breathing, full of fluid, took her back to the vet and decided to have her PTS, it wouldn't have been fair to try and keep treating her. Will miss her and hours later still have puffy red eyes!
