Protein Value of Slugs

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

we' been feeding slugs and snails to the girls when we find them. Anyone know the protein value?

We've also given them some tined sweetcorn as a treat in the evening (hand fed for taming). Anyone know how much is too much?

Would dried mealworms be better? How about sultanas?

thanks

Not sure about protein value but they certainly don't do any harm! We found about 30 snails under a bucket the other day. I tipped them onto the patio and smashed them all for the girls. They had a field day! There were bits of snail flying everywhere

Next day we had a few squitty poos and a magnificent 104g egg from Pom! 8)

Couldnt tell you about the protien value of slugs but im sure they are full of it :D

I would have thought that 1 small tin of sweetcorn in water would be ok to feed about 3 times a week, mealworms and sultanas are good treats too.

I dont tend to give mine treats every night, maybe 4 nights a week & they get a variety then - sweetcorn, mealworms, cucumber, strawberry tops etc The girls each seem to have a favourite!

I give mine 1 small tin of sweetcorn between eight of hem each evening or at least every time they free range...to lure them back into the Eglu.

Don't forget to worm them regularly if you are feeding them slugs, as they are a host for the little bu**ers!

I'll just trust that they know how many to eat themselves!

They certainly didn't eat all 30 that I squashed for them (about 5 left over). Had to hose off the patio before all the squashed snails dried in the sun!! Snail entrails seem to be very sticky.

I use dried mealworms, as they are just easier than sweetcorn - no preparation needed. I'm afraid my 'gardening' fleece now has a permanent collection of dried worm in the pocket! I only use them as a bribe, works every time.

According to 'tinterweb....the protein value of molluscs is approx 24% so I suppose you'd have to weigh them.

Nice information. Mind I hope the wife doent catch me weighing them on the flour scales

We use around 1 tin of sweetcorn every 3 days between the 3 hens ..... for taming purposes only. They'l quite happily eat it out of my hand, but they wont let me pet them yet.

The certainly look up when they hear the kitchen door opening now to see what we have in our hands.

Nice infor about the slugs full of worms. I am certain that the breed who sold us our girls said that if we put Cider vinegar in the water all the time its good for them AND it keeps them worm free. Anyone else heard this? What else do you use for worming them?
