Just found a tick on my cat - what should I do?

Recommended Posts

The cats seem to pick them up from a small patch of grass on the other side of our very tall garden hedge. The land is in front of some council owned bungalows with elderly residents. It isn't part of their gardens and he council steins it about once a year.

We offered to buy it a few years ago, take down the hedge and make it part of our garden, but we were told it wasn't for sale. If we'd got it, it would've become a veg plot and I bet the ticks wouldn't be so common. Luckily the children don't play in it so none of us has been bitten.

Gross - I hate ticks with a passion.

One night hubby and I were trying to set up the playstaion network wirelessly. He asked me to read out our moden number or something. Modem is on the floor. I bent over to read the number and hear this little 'plink' on the laminate. I look at where the sound came from and saw the biggest, fattest, most swollen tick ever. It had to have fallen off of my head/neck/shoulders area - the thought really repulsed me.

Once I had 'run over' the tick with the kids toy wheelbarrow (made a satisfying crunch and squelch) I jumped in a hot bath and commenced with full body examination.

Horrid revolting things they are!!

yuk!

Just remember everyone to check yourselves if you've been out in long grass or 'deer areas', also watch out for any 'target marks' around bites like this one, which could indicate the presence of Lymes

I tuck my trousers into my socks/boots and check upper torso too, thankfully we're not in a high tick area. I always checks the hooonds over, including between their toes as they both have webbed feet.

Lymes is easily treated with antibs and ticks can be removed with a tick hook like the O'Tom ones..... please don't try to get them off with your fingers or tweezers.

That sounds totally gross Jellykelly, I'd be asking where I could get a new skin

Thanks for posting that Claret - I can't believe how squeamish I am about ticks; given what else I deal with its ridiculous. Anyway its really helpful to see a tick bite aftermath. Since this episode we have invested in a new lawnmower and the main grass is scalped but I still have margins of long grasses and wild flowers; just right for the cats and the ticks to hide in whilst I sit about admiring it all :D BTW the tick is still in its gin on the window sill, I don't know why I haven't thrown it away; I think subconciously I am using it to ward off other ticks
