RIP Holly ... now have lone chicken. What to do?

Recommended Posts

Holly died at 9.00 this evening. She was one of two GNR that arrived with my (green eglu) for Christmas 2006. She developed peritonitis a couple of weeks ago, but seemed to have picked up again after treatment with Metacam and Baytril. But it was clear yesterday afternoon that she was getting weaker again. I did manage to tempt her to eat some tuna and yogurt this morning, but by teatime I couldn't even interest her in mealworms or raisins. She spent most of the evening on my lap, gradually slipping away. At least she had a good life - FR almost every day - and didn't suffer for long - although weak, she spent yesterday afternoon in the sun scratching around the compost heap.

Now I have the dilemma of a lone 41/2-year-old chicken. I would like to get some more, but current circimstances are not ideal for intros

So sorry to hear about Holly :( .

If you can't manage introductions then rehoming is probably the best for your remaining hen but having said that a number of people on the forum have reported success keeping a lone chicken. You'll probably need to give her a lot more attention and maybe mirrors for company.

If you find she is unhappy then maybe you could rehome her or it would have given you time to consider if you could manage introductions.
