New hens, clever hens

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm so relieved and happy, that I'm just going to have to share our first-day experiences with you...

Richard & I picked up our 3 new ladies today - a Gingernut Ranger, a Bluebell and a Miss Pepperpot. I'm ashamed to say that so far we are calling them Ginger, Belle and Pepper. I'd like to think we could come up with something more clever but I suspect the names will stick.

We picked up our hens from Widgits Farm, and they were nice & helpful. We got them home, put the carrier straight into the run and opened it up to let them wander out when they felt like it. That was at about 4pm, and we've been out there ever since just watching them :D

I'd read lots of advice on getting new hens and many people said they might have to be picked up and placed into the coop on the first night. I'm mighty glad to say they put themselves to bed eventually, even though I'm sure they've never seen anything like an eglu before - clever girls. We tempted them to the eglu throughout the day with treats on the edge and just inside. When the light was fading I hung a torch inside to tempt them in. As we were eating our barbecued sausages for dinner they kept wandering in and out, one or two at a time. Eventually all three went in and didn't come back out, and I snuck over to shut the door & grab the torch. Relief!

Can't wait 'til tomorrow, just to watch them some more :-) Not sure there's any more room on the camera's memory card though...

you'll not manage to get anything done in the evenings now!

Getting hens was one of my better moves - I can't imagine being without hens now. The other thing to remember is that the more you get to know them, the better it gets (they get to learn how you work too).
