sydbass
My daughter was in the garden today eating a cheese string - well, it was like the charge of the light brigade. They chased her ands literally pecked it out of her hand It was a great tool for coaxing them back in their run though. Can they eat cheese in small amounts? and what about jacket potato skins? Weve only had them just over a week and cant believe how tame they are, clambouring over us to get the treats!
Mollie333
I will never forget the day my 18 month old niece got the grated cheese and threw it out the door , imagine about 13 hens and a cockerel come running towards it. They loved it, not sure if it's 'bad' for them, but it didn't do them any harm.

Tigerlily
Well mine love cheese so they have it as a treat every now and then... the spoilt so and so's love wensleydale and cranberry and cooked potatoes should be fine, but no raw potatoes as they can be poisonous I'm not sure what DEFRA would say about cheese... but bah humbug to them! edited to correct spoilt *d'oh!* Edited May 22, 2011 by Guest
sydbass
Thanks Migsy and Mollie 333 - I guess its ok then. Ive seen from other posts that chickens can be choosy - theyve turned their beaks up at lots of things but boy, did they like the cheese! Goosey Lucy
DEFRA: officially the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. However I'm sure lots of witty Omlet peeps have their own versions

Duncan08
Our girls love cheese, much to the dogs dismay as it is one of his favourites too. They especially like Sunday dinner left overs when they get their veggies in cheese sauce!
chickenopolis
If I want my girls to come to me from the top of the garden, I shout in a voice not dissimilar to the wonderful Joyce Grenfell voice "Ladies.....Cheese....". Two girls come lumping down the garden, making a warbling sound and they then get some grated cheese, only about a thumbs worth size and only as a treat. They have had this for the last couple of years as an occasional treat and it seems to do them no harm!! Don't mention the grapes tho - they scoff them like their life depends on it
sydbass
Thanks Duncan08 - I didnt think of sunday dinner leftovers! I love the look of the setup with your eglu - it looks very tidy!
sydbass
Hi Chickenopolis - I now have a wonderful image of your ladies charging down the garden for their cheese - never realised chickens were such characters.
Duncan08
Thank you Sydbass, that was when it was new! It has since had an extension and the blocks get covered in soil where the girls kick out everywhere, so it dosent always look quite so tidy. Then OH and DS manage to kick all the bark outside into the pond. And I had to pinch a bit of the log roll to edge a bit of uneven path The first weekend of the month, is clean up chooks, pen and area. Everything including the chucks gets a good clean, wormed, de loused, scrubbed within an inch of its life. It dosent last long mind The girls are going to work this weekend for the summer, breaking up some lousy soil and adding some nutrients with their poo, I have bought some netting and will set them too it! But back on topic, the girls always get the left over veg from dinner, they get the cheese sauce, but not the gravy. I also got one of those Easi Yo yoghurt makers (they were half price in Lakeland) and make them probiotic yoghurt, which they adore with porridge oats. Grapes, are another favourite and mealworms. Its easier to find out what they don't like I think!
