Minnie&Moose
Mona the leghorn was obviously struggling this morning to pass an egg. Rushed to the vet who gave her calcium and oxytocin injections, and I gave her a warm bath for about 20 mins when we got home. I also gave her a dose of nutridrops. I've had to come into work so have left her in a cat box in the house with water, but no food (she was standing, eyes shut, not responding to anything when I left, and breathing very heavily - looking very much like a soon to be ex-chicken). I'm trying to get home as soon as I can to see how she is and perhaps give her another warm bath if there's no egg yet. Anything else I can do for her? I know this isn't my fault but we've also got a crop bound chicken who I can't catch/handle (she's on the maggots and avipro diet!) so I'm feeling pathetically incompetent at the moment. Any advice on how to help Mona with her egg much appreciated. Edited May 27, 2011 by Guest
The Dogmother
Nope, you've done all you can really. the only other ting (if you can see the egg inside her vent) is to squirt some lubes in aroudn the egg, rotate it slightly and lubes again. That has worked for one of my hens in the past.
Minnie&Moose
Thanks Claret. I'll have a look when I get home and if it's visible will try adding some lube.
Chucky Mama
I agree that a bit of lube in the form of KY Jelly may help it pass more comfortably. Give the calcium and oxytocin a little time to work too. It may help her to be a little active too to help get things moving.
Minnie&Moose
Unfortunately Mona didn't make it. I arrived home to find her dead but still warm We'll miss her - she was a lovely, friendly bird and stunningly beautiful with her jet black feathers, white ear lobes and amazing comb.
