WIR is on the cards, hoping to make life easier, what company?

Recommended Posts

Instead of moving the eglu and run today, I topped up the run with a bag of wood chip. I, well we (OH also) usually move the eglu after pulling out the tent pegs out of the skirting and I'm usually aching the following day after lifting it. But seeing as we're moving house in less than a fortnight I didn't bother lifting and moving. So I put woodchip down and cleaned the eglu house itself. How tricky is it to clean the side of the eglu that is in the run?! :wall:

We then, eventually, encouraged the chickens into an empty stable to have some louse powder on. They weren't easy to catch - I think they know we can hand feed them and touch them in their eglu run and we won't/can't pick them up so are relaxed but they know something's up when we're in the stable. I don't think OH or I have lice anyway because we got nearly as much powder on ourselves.

I think I've convinced OH about the benefits of a WIR and he said, in his frustration this evening, that we'll have to have a WIR. :) So if anyone knows of a good company for a WIR who will preferably deliver and set up for us at our house in S Wales, please let me know. I'll be off to google also.

I happened to go to the new house today to take measurements. There are two concrete bases very close to each other that could be joined up to make an area of 16 x 5ft. WIR area?

Tis big, don't know if I need a WIR that big though - could make it smaller but with more hens disease would there be much point?!

I'm worried if I ask a local carpenter he won't know the ins and outs of my chicken needs and I'm not sure I know what mesh I need etc. How difficult is it to put up the WIR if I buy one?

Wow thanks Plum. :D I like the look of some of the examples on aviaries 4u website. Okay so is there a particular type of mesh best for chickens? I would want a sloping roof, preferably covers for the side of the run that fit well, kickboards, some type of table or stand so that I don't have to bend to collect eggs. Lots of the examples I have seen are for eglu classics but the opening on the WIR for egg collecting would need to be at the back for me. !goyellow!

I'm off to look at those links now...

I've had a look at Aviaries 4u and Bay Housing already.

Snowberry, blocking off space for new girls does not help the morehens disease. Oh my - I can't justify spending nearly £400 on delivery and putting up. I'm sure I could persuade my OH that he won't make a right mess of it... ;)

Did you have a WIR from Bay in the end?

I was just making excuses for you to justify the bigger house  My house isn't up yet as I was waiting till this weekend for b&q to have an offer on paving...15% off but not home delivery *hmph* so I have ordered 2x 1.5 x 1.00 grass matting to put down under a 6 x 9ft WIR. Things are stacking up what with my law exams but the chicks will have to get out there soon, so watch this space!
