First free range - success :-)

Recommended Posts

After having the chooks for about a week and a half, I couldn't stand seeing them in the run any more so yesterday we popped the door and let them out in the garden. They were hilarious - not the most adventurous chooks, they were very alert and flapped around quite a bit whenever there was a squirrel/pigeon/bit of wind around  But they were also checking the whole place out and I'm sure they will settle after they're more used to it. I made sure to lure them over and feed them sweetcorn a few times just to reassure myself that I could get their attention when I need it. I was pretty sure a handful of sweetcorn thrown into the run would have them home in no time. But best of all, after about an hour (during which OH relocated coop & run to new patch of grass) they just took themselves back into the run! It was starting to spit a bit and, being proud hens & concerned with hairdos, they avoid the rain 8)

It was so lovely seeing them out and about, I'll try to spend a few hours out there with them today. Things are going so well, and now the only thing I have left to do is find some eggs! C'mon girls...

Mine will be kept in a fairly big run but would like to let them out occasionally.

Once they've been out do they 'hanker' after freedome again or are they quite happy in a WIR until I decide to let them out again? I don't want them squawking to be let out just cos they've had a taste of it!!!

Our hens don't really squawk much at all, though they do seem eager to come out of the run now when they see me - they all come to the door and go straight through when I open it. But we don't have a particular routine so I don't think they 'expect' to be freed at any particular time. I think others have said that theirs are more impatient - e.g. if they are used to being let out first thing in the morning and you're late, they might let you know it  Maybe it depends on the chooks, or maybe ours aren't bold enough to be demanding yet.

My chickens are constantly in a large, netted free ranging area, so when they are cooped up in the eglu run (like if we're going out and won't be back until after dark) they pace up and down looking for a way out  They're generally not very noisy over it though :)

I hope you get some lovely eggs !egg! soon jennym
