Will they be ok - advice please!

Recommended Posts

Hi. My two little girls have today been relocated out of the nice warm kitchen into the cold, wet garden! We have put together the orange eglu classic which I bought second hand and assembled the 2m run. I have had a number of issues with it and so have several questions:-

1. the extension does not seem to fit with the door and one side seems to stay in off the ground no matter what. Any advice? At present I am only using the 2m.

2. the little door to collect the eggs seems to have collected water which I now can't get out. It had a little bit of loose plastic over a small hole but this is now inside the moulding! I am concerned that if it is left, once it dries out it will become a hiding place for mites. Any suggestions as to whether it should be blocked up and with what?

3. the run is a bit 'work in progress' at the moment. I have filled it with 2 bags of natural hardwood chippings from B&Q which was damp when we emptied it. Is this stuff ok for them?

4. I have covered the run with corrugated plastic sheets over the sunshade and a piece of plastic sheeting at one end where the plastic was too short. The corrugated sheets only go half way down. Will they get too hot? Should the corrugated sheets go fully over the run to the ground to stop the chips getting any wetter?

In addition to these things, they have a play sand in a washing up bowl, glug and grub and grit. I have hung up CDs but they are not interested in these and tomorrow I plan to find a couple of branches for them to perch on. Have I forgotten anything? :anxious:

I am sorry about all the questions but I have had them in the house for 3 weeks and am struggling to cope with seeing them in the rain outside.:cry:

1. No idea sorry

2. The mouldings do have injection holes usually with fluff in and may be a place for redmite. I just check it and if in doubt spray with poultry shield. You say some water got in the moulding so I wouldn't block it off or it won't drain out.

3. Damp chippings are fine

4. You can play around with the covers and direction of rain as you want. Put the shade under the plastic to prevent it getting hot and make sure one side is open to allow ventilation and I would remove it all in good weather.

Sounds like you are setting up fine for your little ones. Shame it is raining for them. When I had the cube run I put a cover over the run down to the ground on the side the rain was coming from when it was a deluge. :D

Have you got the converter? If you've got a classic and run, then you need the converter as the first extension?

It can take a bit of fiddling to make it fit the door shape to begin with, but it should all stand evenly. Maybe if you could post photos, we might be able to advise on the run.

I agree with Plum's advice above. Your girls will be fine, it must be hard seeing them outside for the first time but they will be ok.

Many thanks for all your replies. Plum I really appreciate you taking the time to reassure me and deal with all my worries. The girls have been fine as you all said they would be although I did sneak them back in to kitchen at bed time  . Still trying to work out extension and need it for introductions this weekend! Think I will try weighting it down and covering any gaps with additional mesh. It is a nuisance and it must go together some how as the last owners have used it. Perhaps it is our garden that is not level and the run is fine :D

pips, we have the same prob - very uneven ground. I have found that weighing down the sides/ends does help in the short term tho not sure it would be entirely fox-proof.

basically, put the run where you want it and then be prepared to shift bits of stone to make it safe®!
