pips_pekins
Hi. Have got carried away by morehens and have arranged to collect two new chickens. I had planned on splitting the eglu run and keeping the new and old in each section. However it has just dawned on me that this is not very practical in terms of access to food etc Has anyone tried this or found a way to make it work? I would be very grateful for any ideas on how I might be able to do this. Many thanks.
Green Tea
As it's only temporary you could just put food in anything - my girls don't seem to mind what they eat or drink out of so long the food/water is there At some point though they will need to eat together even if it's outside the run because that's partly how they establish the pecking order. I've had hens get on ok straightaway in the past, it might be worth putting them all together for a few hours and keeping an eye out, with any luck it'll be completely harmonious and you won't need to worry
Raina
Hi, I did my first intro yesterday. Tbh I was quite nervous lol I just put them in the eglu run together,Orakiah pecked & jumped onto of the other hen a few times but after about 10 minutes they were eating together and scratching about. When I opened up the eglu this morning the new chook was the first to come out, they're now getting on like a house on fire
pips_pekins
Thank you Green Tea and I do hope that my intros go as well as you have experienced. I have a number of feeders for them but am unsure how I can arrange the run so that when they are in there I can still fill feeders and water without having to dismantle the run! Sadly they have to stay in the run when I am at work as they are very small (one is a serama and she is only 15 weeks). Raina I am so pleased to hear that your intro went well. I just hope that I am so lucky but need a plan b just in case. One of mine is quite a bully as it is so I am worried about how she will be
Jools
I think you're going to have ongoing problems with the serama. What are the others and how old are they?
pips_pekins
The serama is not a tiny tiny and she is currently in with a bantam naked neck and there is still not much difference in size. Both are about 15 weeks old. I am probably getting a bantam wyandotte and pekin that will be much younger than my two hence the need to get intros right.
