Why does my chicken break the eggs?

Recommended Posts

I have just taken on a chicken that has decided that breaking eggs would be a good idea. why does she do this? will she get out of it? Is she lacking in something? I have taken to getting to the egg before her but this sometimes doesn't work :(

What breed is she? My buff Orpington broke a few eggs just before going broody. The shells were a bit thinner than normal and She was clumsy on them treading around.

Advice from other hen owners was to check she was getting enough calcium...either by making sure there was a grit and shell dish available or by supplementing the water.

I also tried to get in to the coop as soon as she had laid and steal the egg and replace with a porcelain one

Hope this helps

I have read that hens, like other birds, do not have the taste receptors for mustard/chilli, so I think putting mustard in the egg might make you feel better, but doesn't actually bother her much.

I've had some problems with an egg eater - my RIR is a beggar for it. One or two of my ex batts lay thin shelled eggs and they often get eaten if they break or I don't get to them first.

I'm supplementing the water at the moment with Zocal, as recommended by Chucky Mama, but it's very expensive so don't think that is going to be a long term solution either.

She is a RIR as well. I have shell in the coop so hopefully she will eat some of that. My ex battery had thin shells as well but she seems to have sorted it now (not sure what i did) and she lays normal eggs, though the white is cloudy and a little strange looking but we haven't got ill yet lol. Does anyone know why her white is weird looking? I am not up on the chook lingo yet so you will have to excuse the begginers explanations :D
