Quick advice needed for chick problem

Recommended Posts

My second batch of chicks have been hatching today. One chick has a problem, it doesn't seem to be able to walk :( Its legs arn't spradled but its shuffling along on its bum unable to list its own weight.

Heres a vid to show it. Is there anything I can do it. or do you think it will be able to strengthen up on its own in a bit of time, or do I put it out of its misery?

It's head doesn't look right to me, either.

Depends on your point of view. Are you prepared to spend time trying to get it on its feet when it might be a cockerel after all? It wouldn't be a good idea to breed from it, whichever it turns out to be.

It could be a slipped hock or something similar, which you might be able to sort out.

It depends on what would need doing really, my last batch had two with spradle legs which were an easy fix with plasters, now you would never know there was a problem. This batch are a lot of mixed colours anyway so with exception of some that maybe porcelain genes they wont be future breeders anyway. So depends how fixable it is.

Oh and I didn't notice anything wrong with the head?

Oe dear seems another of the chicks has developed the same problem :( I looked up slipped hocks and Im not sure its that, they legs don't seem to have anything wrong with them in the way they bend and move and the joints look normal, they just seem to be unable to left their bodies so they drag their bums along.

Well just a morning update, and very bizarrely the above video is now walking normally! The other one is here and there going upright before sitting funny again, so it seems it might just be a strength thing, perhaps they just needed the muscles to strengthen up a little more. I will update when I get home from work later today on how they are both getting on.

Yup sure enough just got home and all chicks are perfectly mobile. Most were from rather small eggs so they are very diddy chicks. All pegging at around happily now. And to think I nearly put them down, they were chirping so pitifully.
