We had our first egg today. So exciting! Whilst I clearly have no doubt that this is a very fresh egg, I was wondering what steps to take to ensure that salmonella etc is not an issue. We want to be able to give eggs away to friends and family but don't want to be responsible for illness!! The chickens were vaccinated when we got them but how can I ensure that the eggs are fine? They have an 8 square metre run and won't be able to free range due to two very bouncy dogs who would love to chase and catch them. The run, therefore, will be getting more muddy and have more droppings in it. I try and clear where possible but obviously can't get everything up. Any advice? By the way I am loving the hens, real time wasters :D
