what killed my lovely girl

Recommended Posts

Hi all, i found my poor little darling millie dead in the next box this morning. She was a pekin and only 6 months old. I thought she had gone broody as all this week she was sitting on eggs in the nest box of the cube. she seemed happy enough, comming out to eat and drink and have a wander around the garden with her friends. I have even brought some hatching eggs for her to hatch. :( Last night she suddenly took a turn for the worse and was just huddled up in a corner. I checked for everything i could think of and decided if she didnt pick up by today i would take her to the vets. What has happened to my beautiful girl? if only i had taken her to the vets yesterday. My other 2 pekins seem fine. Could she have eaten something that killed her? They free range the garden all day, i just want them to have a happy life. Am heartbroken, she was such a character, the garden is not the same without her bokking at me for treats every time i go outside. RIP my little love am sorry you died alone and i couldnt help you.xxx :(:(

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Really the only way to find out the cause now would be to ask for a post mortem, and if your other hens seem healthy then I don't think it would be worth the expense. It's very unlikely that she'd have eaten something that the others didn't also eat. Sadly sometimes hens do just die for no obvious reason, even young ones. She may have had an infection of some sort, by the time they are displaying signs of illness it's often too late.

So sorry, it's hard when you can't tell what happened and you'll probably never know. :(

Only advice is to check for parasites in the nestbox and house, give it a good clean and try not to analyse too much. I lost one suddenly and you can't help going through loads of scenarios but doesn't get you anywhere.
