Laelia has just laid an egg white - no shell or yolk?

Recommended Posts

Hi, well the title says it all really! Laelia is pretty much an okay layer, however this evening looked a bit peeky. We set about de-lousing the hens and worming them - we use DE, we sprinkle it on them and to worm give it mix with water via syringe, well after this she laid an egg white, this could be due to the stress of being powdered and wormed, as they detest it with a passion, any other ideas what this could be?

quite a strange thing happened today, she went to lay an egg, then came out and laid a yolk then a soft shell after the yolk...then she was back to normal! same bossy laelia etc strutting around like she owns the place! i did give them all some caynenne pepper treatment and that went down really well! so im happy with everything, i think i have been so protective of them all recently, with the new ones and such, my partner says im looking for things that are wrong!

I think your partner has a point. In your Help waiting for a quick reply topic yesterday you were frantically looking to get hold of Tylan, a prescription antibiotic, for what turned out to be a hen trying to lay a soft shelled egg. You are also stressing them unnecessarily by syringing diatom down them which is certainly not to be recommended. What is the cayenne pepper for? Great that they have been deloused (did you actually see any lice)
Does anyone this baytril will sort this problem?
I don't really know how Baytril -again a prescription antibiotic could help with the laying of softies :?

Sorry if I sound overly harsh but you need to Flubenvet your chickens every 3-4 months - the only licensed poultry wormer - that will deal with the worm angle. Then feed a good quality mash or pellet, add a bit of ACV to their water or a tonic like Lifeguard if it takes your fancy. Check for lice and mites at regular intervals. Keep treats to a minimum and sit back and let them get on with it. If you think one is not right, if it doesn't either lay a softie in 24 hours, pop it along to the vet.
