Ain't Nobody Here
I've had fine netting over all my raised beds and everything seems to be doing really well (carrots/sprouts/cabbage/broccoli/onions/beetroot) with no sign of bird or insect damage or infestation. Is it safe to remove the netting now or should I just leave it on? Will I still be at risk of birds eating things? Have all the insects laid their eggs by now? LolaLayla
I would leave it on until the end of season, certainly for brassicas. I had brassicas demolished by pigeons last year when my bird scarers (CD's on canes) fell down. This year I have used netting and the results are great. I also noticed a cabbage white butterfly in the garden yesterday so it was probably looking for somewhere to lay eggs! chickencam
Cabbage white butterflies are at their peak in August so I would leave it in place until at least September. We have sometimes had to remove enviromesh from brassicas in the winter because white fly has managed to get in, but last year we left it in place all year and had lovely clean purple sprouting and caulis in the spring. the carrots also stay covered until we have finished with them in the spring because the root fly seems to have another hatch in late winter. sjp
leave it in place any pigeons in the area are just waiting for the nets to come off. veg is a lot sweeter than grass at this time of year and has a higher moisture content and is a lot less work to find they can just sit on the roofs and plan the next feast
Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks for the quick responses . I'll get the netting back on the broccoli (I took it off to pick some ).
gongladosh
I don't think my hens have read the rule book - they'll eat any veg that we plant... Chickenwire is saving some of it, but they're poking their beaks through the gaps and eating whatever they can.
