I'm not sure of the technical term, but at the top of my garlic there's a long, twisty shoot about 18 inches long with a bulgy pointy bit near the end. Is this normal? Is it about to flower and is it a sign I should be digging it up?

I had those 2 and I picked them off - look like mini garlics - are harmless. Picked off as I didnt want to weaken -plant. If you look down list of subjects you will find a garlic question re me on this and Lesley I think kindly answered it.

they've gone to seed they will need useing first if there is and size in them as they wont keep

Oh, sorry I didn't pick this up earlier. If you mean what I think you mean, the green things you are talking about are called garlic scapes, and they are delicious!

 

Google garlic scapes and you will get lots of recipes.

 

I was going to pickle some, but I ended up using our entire lot to make a sort of (very strong) pesto, which I used as a pasta coating, and also in various meat dishes.
