I sent my fairly old (and extremely sluggish) laptop to a local chap yesterday for a good cleanout and reinstall. Just got it back and it's like having a new machine . (I was hankering after a lovely Dell laptop for my birthday but am very glad I didn't succumb now!).

 

He showed me a photo of the gunk he took out of the fan inside - it looked like a small hairy rug (thanks Riley ).

 

He says it's miles faster and much quieter than a much newer, higher spec laptop belonging to a chap up the road which he'd done the same thing to.

 

So the moral of this story is, don't always assume you have to buy an expensive new laptop if yours isn't working well .

Wow, that's encouraging. I keep meaning to get my netbook sorted out, one of those jobs I keep putting off.

I got a new Dell laptop for my birthday, so I took all my games off my old one to put on the new. My old laptop is now going super quick . Anyway, my new laptop can actually play my flight simulator games without sticking and with high quality graphics on.

Sometimes getting a new laptop is best, but you need to make sure you regulary clean up your old one to keep it running quicker for longer.

Just clean up all the temporary and unused files, archive documents you don't use, remove programs you don't use, run a defrag and use a compressed air blaster to clear the fan.... Taaa Daaa, runs like new

Sometimes that's just not enough though, eventually a complete overhaul is all that will work . I did all those things regularly (apart from the fan ).
