Mr Rhode Island Red
My Ancona cockerel has grown up fast (he's 16 weeks old) so it is time for him to move in with the original flock of girls. But here's my predicament: The original flock of girls were bought from a local, well-known hybrid supplier, but my Ancona cockerel was bought from a local chicken enthusiast who was breeding them and then selling them. The original flock of girls is therefore probably vaccinated. But I'm not sure about the Ancona cockerel, as to weather he is vaccinated or not. And I have heard that it is a big no-no to mix vaccinated birds with non-vaccinated birds So, does it matter if he was put in with the original flock, in terms of getting disease? Egluntyne
There should be no problem ... except that he might be a little young to mix with adult hens. They may beat him up a bit.
HH HENS
I mixed vaccinated hybrids with pure breed unvaccinated birds over 14months ago and have had no problem. I think it is quite complexed depending on whether it was a live vaccine that they had, then there is a small risk that they can pass the disease on, but not all vacines are live. That is what I have gleaned from the various poultry health books that I have read. Hope that helps a bit.
