surfer_chicken
Mildred crouched for me this afternoon! She has been brooding her chicks and they are nearly 5 weeks old. Does this mean she will be laying again soon? And how soon?

surfer_chicken
Quite right- Mildred laid an egg this morning. It was a little small even for her, but I'm sure she'll soon get warmed up and back to normal. One quick question- she's left her chicks during the day now as she was pecking at them, but they're just over five weeks old, so I'm putting her back in with them at night. How old do they need to be before they can spent the night without mum? (She really isn't happy in there with them- getting up every time they try to sleep under her). There are 5 chicks btw. sjp
thats what a hen does so that the cock can mount her and to show that she is ready to make babies and that she accepts him as the boss for that moment in time anyway knees bent, wings head end slightly up to form a cradle bum in the air with vent on show thats the basic discription
