goldenkippers
Our Gingernut Ranger Peggy is not very well. She's sometimes been under the weather before but has perked up in a day or so, but this hasn't happened this time. She is about 20 months old. She has been lethargic for a week and today her poo was very yellow and runny. She is eating and drinking but not very much. Sour crop? Some weird kind of worm? I haven't taken her to the vet yet as he doesn't know much about chickens (though he would know more than I do). Any advice gratefully received. I hate to see her suffering. moochoo
When was she last wormed? Is her abdomen hot or swollen? Is she still laying?
goldenkippers
She was wormed in the last couple of weeks with Flubenvet powder in her food. Her abdomen didn't feel hot last time I picked her up but can feel again today. I don't think she's laying.
Egluntyne
If it was sour crop, her breath would smell horrible and the crop would feel squishy.
Tweety
If she has been off colour for a week, I would take her to the vet. He may not be an expert on chickens, but it doesn't sound as if she is getting any better by herself. At least the vet can prescribe some medication for her if necessary. goldenkippers
I am afraid she died between 6 and 9am this morning I had been putting off going to the vet as I thought she'd get better on her own and I'm quite busy looking after my baby, but she took a turn for the worse Now I feel bad about that. Tweety
Sorry to hear that. Tbh, the vet may not have been able to do much to help her - hens hide the fact that they are ill, and by the time you notice that there is a problem it is often too late. I usually give any off colour chooks 24 hours or so from first noticing signs that they are under the weather - in case it is something like a soft shelled egg and they feel better once they have laid it- and if the problem is something I can't deal with and they don't improve by then, I take them to the vet. I'm not saying that this is the right thing to do, just the way I deal with a poorly girl.
