Has anyone ever arranged a Street party ?

Recommended Posts

I was chatting to one of my elderly neighbours this morning and she mentioned that one of the roads in the village had started thinking about their street party to celebrate the jubilee next year and she thought ours should be arranged by someone younger so would I do it ? Having caught me unawares I was frantically thinking 'jubilee :? what jubilee? street party sounds royal family link but it's the olympics :? ' and agreed.:roll:

So I've established it's the Queens diamond jubilee 2nd/3rd June next year (yhay for google  )

I now turn to my other source of advice and info.

Isn't it a bit early to be planning ? I wondered whether to put a note around the neighbours in the autumn and invite them to mine one evening for drinks and nibbles to have a chat about what we wanted to do ?

We are quite a friendly street with about 1/2 families with parents in their 40's and most of the rest elderly. It's a cul de sac as well so no concerns about closing the road. About 20 houses I guess.

f you are going to close the road

No can't see that we'd need to close the road, nice wide pavements, big turning circle at the end, several large gardens if we chose to use someones garden and could borrow school field if we needed it.

 Although that has made me think about the school and although it is rare for a school event to be at the w/e maybe I'll send them a letter at the start of next term letting them know our plans just to make sure.

We have one every year :D

We get permission form the council to close the road and have to pay for the correct signage to be put in place by approved contractors, we get insurance every year and arrange for the council to supply extra bins for the rubbish and recycling. We have c100 houses in our Victorian street and nearly everyone takes part - a wonderful day with entertainment, plenty of food and lots of things for the children to do.

It's a wonderful chance for everyone to pull together with the organisation 8)
