Doing my head in!! Wood chip issues

Recommended Posts

I have FINALLY lost it with the girls run. It is getting on my nerves!:evil: They have a lovely big square at the top of the garden which has a tree overhanging, so I can't build a WIR. The ground up until now has always been covered with woodchip thingys but the trouble is that the girls kick the blasted stuff all over the show and I'm fed up of clearing it up! The square has a small fence around it to help keep said woochip thingys in but it still looks rubbish. I don't want to make the fence any bigger as I won't see them!! I was thinking of putting up a new fence, roughly same size but smarter and then putting a membrane down and then chippings/small pebbles/garden type stones on top but am worried that the girls won't like it and it won't be good for them - lets face it they don't like change so anything I do is BOUND to upset them. I just want where they are too look nice for us and to be comfy for them.

Any suggestions, if I think on I'll take a photo and post it so you can see what I'm on about.

My girls have a playground which is fenced but doesn't have a roof (just sunshades to keep the girls in and the rain out  so they're only allowed in there during FR time as it's not fox proof).

Anyhoo, as an experiment, I put cocoa shell down... and they LOVE scratching around in it and digging it in to our clay soil (no membrane)! It seems to have disappeared now (half a bag lasted 6 weeks or so) so I'll bung some more in and just keep topping up :) Also smells nice when it first goes down. Only thing is, I just have to pick out big bits of string and WHY... and it's a bit pricey at about £7 a sack

I once tried shingle over membrane and the poo was just horrendous - never again :vom: I had real trouble hosing it down. Also, I have limestone chips outside the run (big chunks, bigger than dice, a few quid for a bag from Wickes) thinking that the girls would leave it alone but my black hens just LOVE digging it up, whenever they manage to escape the playground :wall:

This flooring lark's bit of a minefield (in more ways than one, especially when Roxy's escaped!!! She's the biggest digger of the lot - I should have called her "JCB" )

PS We've fixed a few decking planks up to keep the flooring in

So basically it doesn't matter what I do they'll out fox me - great!:lol: Right so methinks it might be time for a new fence that is better sunk into the ground, and maybe some inedible plants around it to pretty it up abit. Will try and get pic tommorow so that you can see what I mean.

Thanks for all your replies BTW xxx

I think they are just big diggers. I've just bought a cube & run & put woodchip in & it all comes out again. I did put in sleepers thinking they would be a stop for it, but nope !!

Ta da !!!!

It did look lovely at the time but now it is halfway down the hill. Will need to rethink, but they do love it so I think I'll end up putting up with it
