troyca
Has anyone used Apis Exomite for varroa control? I thought I would try it as they say you should vary your treatment choices so varroa doesn't get resistent. Have just applied the tray to the bee hive entrance and they don't seem too happy. At least with apiguard you just lay the stuff on the top inside the hive. Not sure about annoying the girls by covering everyone in a rather stinky powder... Old Speckled Hen
I thought I would try it as they say you should vary your treatment choices so varroa doesn't get resistent. I have not tried it but I'm aware of how it works and the fact that it is deployed at the entrance. Apis exomite is a thymol based treatment as is Apiguard so you're not ringing ANY changes. Varroa are not resistant to thymol Might put off any wasp attack mind Varying treatment choices is more to do with Integrated Pest Management so that you are doing things such as Using open mesh floors. Drone brood culling. Comb trapping. Dusting with icing sugar. Using none pyrethroid Varroacides e.g. Thymol based products, organic acids. Shook swarm technique. troyca
tHANKS. For the record I got a huge roar from the bees when I put it in the entrance and they did all they could to find a a nother way in. I think I will be returning to apiguard as it seems far less traumatic for my girls. The other methods you mentioned I am using. Perhaps the trays that come with the Exomite would be useful for icing sugar application as the actual product can be smelled by a human at 20 paces so god only knows what the poor bees are putting up with!! I am now feeling SERIOUSLY guilty for having used it...
Old Speckled Hen
Yes, it looks horrid. They hate the smell but at least if its in the hive it must be less traumatic. I use Apilife Var which is thymol based and put on the top bars in a similar fashion as Apiguard. best of luck
