Printer recommendations please

Recommended Posts

Our printer has finally given up the ghost so it needs to be replaced pdq. The trouble is, I don't know where to begin as it's all greek to me. It'll be used mostly for A2 and GCSE coursework which consists of quite a few photographs apparently so a pretty decent quality machine is priority. We have a Mac so maybe Fred is the man to ask!!

Any help gratefully received in layman's terms please *ahem*

I have an hp deskjet 3050 - wireless, with printer, scanner and copier, asda are selling them for £30 at the moment (with £5 delivery though) and I got mine for £31.20 with free delivery from amazon. It is compatible with macs as long as you have Mac OS X v 10.5 or v 10.6 :)

We got an HP Photosmart Plus which is wireless. It's a printer, scanner and does very good photos. Not sure how much it costs as ours wa a Manager's Special in Comet - they are always worth looking out for. I think we got about £20 off because it didn't have a box!

Comet are very good for straightforward advice IMO - they don't try to pull a fast one, or at least they never have with me or the OH.

Steer clear of Epson, they are rubbish IMO

Try to get a printer that has seperate colour cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow opposed to just black and colour)

If he is printing a lot of black and white stuff (I did, all those past papers!) maybe invest in a cheap black and white laser printer too, I have this one it is very good for the price, and it works with mac!

I have two HP printers but after the fiasco trying to get a DOA HP computer fixed/replaced/returned end last year I'd hesitate before buying from HP again.

As Fred says look for a printer that has separate ink cartridges. Some printers are much cheaper than a set of ink cartridges so the cost of the printer should not factor in as much as cost and availability of cartridges as thats what you will find yourself buying again and again.

HP XL cartridges in Black and Colour can be bought cheaply on ebay with around a 450 page yield (which is for hefty printing, imo, around 15 university standard essays worth of paper).

I tend not to print exam papers off as it's terrible for the environment and if I can read it off the screen and just use my lined pad it doesn't waste ink, either.
