Cunning plan

Recommended Posts

having read about intrducing a new hen to 2 established girls - I would like your advice.

Got Maggie last saturday and she is separated from the others as advised. I was planning to FR her tommorrow with the less agressive hen and stand by with water pistol. And then to put her in the eglu when they are sleepy and get up early sunday and separate again.

Is this workable or should I FR her with both and pray :eh: Or am I rushing things. Easier at w/e as not working. Jez - one of my hens is very agressive towards her. Thanks everyone

A lot depends on your hens and how much time you can spend with them as to how fast you do it. But I do the same - mix them with the less dominant hens first, sometimes just for a short while for a few days, then with the most dominant hen on her own. Then all together.

Well Maggie May (my new girl) and Delilah FR together yesterday with me watching their every move. Del went for her so squirted her with water gun. It went reasonably well and MM enjoyed it. i felt like an extra in a Jame Bond movie sitting with my gun squirting madly. its gonna be a slow process

Update - well decided to in the event of losing a chicken this week to go for it - they ie Jez (small hen formerly bottom of pecking order ) now a first rate tart to boot and Maggie May (OH adores her! ) who Jez pecks every now and then are into together. We were interested in sleeping arrangements last night and both retired to their own bedrooms. MM is clever thou if Jez pecks her she squawks and OH runs out like sometthing out of CSI armed with his water pistol. Lurve - I think so.

Oh and by the way - I want another hen - I never thought Morehens would strike here - I thought I was immune - help what do I do? :D

there is only one thing to do if suffering morehens - give in :) ! I have suffered all summer and instead of instantaneously giving in and getting one more for my flock I held out and resisted :wall: ...I now have 3 more and I don't think I am cured yet...I am looking at some hybrids for winter laying  !

Hate to tell you this but there is no known cure for morehens! Hybrids for winter laying seems a very sensible idea to me!
