Henergy
I've just made up a batch of buns & for some reason after coming out of the oven they have gone flat (they looked fine in the oven !) Any ideas ?
Olly
I though at first this was about some poorly rabbits! What sort of mix, was it yeast-based?
Henergy
normal fairy cake sponge mixture eggs, flour, butter, sugar
Chickendoodle
Maybe the mix was too wet. If you are using your own eggs they tend to be bigger than shop ones and so have nore liquid. I always weigh the eggs (in their shells) and use the same weight of flour etc as the eggs
squiffs
They were probably not in for long enough. Did you do the toothpick test before they came out? They usually collapse in on themselves if they haven't cooked properly in the middle. Did you put baking powder in with them? I didn't know you could make non-bread buns! Olly
Well that's why I asked - 'bun' can encompass everything from a rock cake to a fairy cake to a bread mix! I'd agree, mixture too wet or the oven wasn't hot enough are the two most likely culprits. Since having my own eggs which vary in size, I always do what chickendoodle recommends above, it makes perfect sponges.
Henergy
Do you know, it could be the eggs ! Mine are quite large compared to shop bought. I didn't even consider that !!! PS must be a west country thing to call your fairy cakes buns !!!!!
squiffs
I wish my eggs were bigger than shop bought! Consider your sinking buns a lucky thing
