susieodea
Hi, I recently bought three chickens who are settling in nicely in the back garden. We have a group of tree surgeons coming in next week to do some major cutting in the garden, which is going to take most of the day. I'm worried about the girls being scared of the noise and movement and was wondering whether I should lock them in their (unmoveable) coop, let them out to see what's happening, or put them in a large cardboard box with food and straw in the kitchen until the work's done. Advice please! Edited September 16, 2011 by Guest
The Dogmother
I regularly use the chainsaw in the garden, but apart from putting the chooks in the run while I am doing it, I don't take any special precautions and they seem to be OK with it. Pearls007
We regularly mow the grass with a loud petrol mower right up to the edge of the run - the chickens don't seem to mind at all.
gongladosh
they'll be fine - if you get concerned, stay visible in the garden while the work is going on - they'll be a bit more reassured if they can see you.
Olly
Mine have put up with everything from mowing and strimming, to having half the garden dug up when a new patio was laid - as long as they are not in the firing line for any chips from the saw, they'll be fine. Oh - don't forget to save as much sawdust as you can for the run, it's great for them to scratch around in!
bouldercroft
We did a lot of tree work after Irene came through and the girls were completely unfazed by it all. In fact at one point they were actively getting in the way while the chainsaw-ing was going on....
