Vitamin D

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

The run is tucked beside a hedge and small hawthorn, which makes for dappled shade in the summer and protects the hens from the predominantly westerly weather pattern here. The girls are still getting whatever daily free ranging time they can get between me getting home from work and darkness, so although the light is fading they should still be topping up on Vitamin D.

Weekend free ranging for us will be the norm soon, though. In deep winter they won't get any direct sunlight and I don't really want to move the run to the other side of the garden. Will they need Vitamin D supplement top up and if so, where do you buy it from?

I know this link won't work but am posting it in case anyone can enable it (I think cutting and pasting works). If you think it is a better idea to move the run, I can do it (it just tucks in so neatly where the spuds and tomatoes were last year).

Thanks,

To make a link work, highlight the link and click on URL in the grey boxes above where you type - near the bold, italics, quote etc

Hello!

I logged out of Flickr and also Omlet after posting, but read your suggestion.

I came back to the post to try what you said but tested my original link and then yours, Chucky Mama. They both worked ... but I'm not quite sure if they just work for me? Can someone let me know?

Apologies,

Mrs P.

The link does work now. Your garden is lovely :D

The chicken dont need a vit D supplement during the winter, they should be getting enough light. Show breeders will keep certain colour chooks shaded at all times even under cover in sheds etc.. with no ill effects

Its worth adding a good tonic to the chooks water a week a month if you can, not essential but it will help your chooks get through the winter in top condition
