alet_chicken
Hi, I have a flock with hens only (a mixture of ex-batts and pure breeds, aged between 2 and 4). However, both me and OH heard crowing in our run this morning! There were at least 6 proper full-blown crows (though perhaps not the loudest I've ever heard). Unfortunately we couldn't get close enough to identify the culprit (who appears to not want to crow unless we are inside the house), but I could hear our hens cooing back at whoever was making the noise (so they must know who it is!). There is still the possibility that the crowing might have come from somewhere else (we are not the only chicken keepers on the block), or that it may just be a blip during moulting (a couple of them are pretty threadbare at the moment) but I am worried now that one of my hens have started crowing in her old age. We live in a built-up area so this is seriously Bad News unless we can nip it in the bud pretty quickly. Does anybody have any experience/advice on this sort of problem? Space Chick
I'd put my money on it being one of the legbars... It's rare, but does happen, and is more common in legbars. Has one of them grown spurs? I have a columbine (legbar hybrid) which has an impressive set of spurs... But thankfully isn't crowing.... My leghorn crows - proper crows - first thing in the morning, before being let out of the eglu, and at no other time. She is a she.
alet_chicken
Good news! There were a couple of lusty crows again this morning, while OH was outside, and it is NOT one of ours. Can't tell you how relieved I am, though my heart goes out to my neighbour to whom the crower seems to belong. Didn't get much sleep last night worrying about it, I tell you. I have a leghorn with an impressive set of spurs (she has had them for some time, but is a good layer and is having a serious moult at the moment), the two legbars as well as an enormous evil kanievil maran who like to jump on the little 'uns on a regular basis. But fortunately none of them has felt the urge to crow ... yet.
