Sloe - gin or vodka?

Recommended Posts

I've just picked 3lbs of lovely fat sloes, as I was planning to make sloe gin. However, searching on here I found a couple of people recommending sloe vodka - any views on this, I like gin anyway but I'm wondering if vodka would be more popular, as I'm planning to give most of it away as presents.

Also - can I put the sloes in the freezer as they are, in a plastic bag, or should I lay them out on trays and open freeze them? I've never made this before so any tips would be welcome.

Gotta be gin. Vodka doesn't really have a taste, so all you'll end up with is basically alcoholic sweetened sloe juice. The juniper flavouring in gin adds complexity to the flavour, resulting, in my opinion, in a more well rounded drink. That and the fact you can often get cheaper cheap gin than you can cheap vodka (though admittedly not always).

Ah - as ever The Major has come up with the science behind the answer! Thanks for the replies above - think I'm going to freeze them anyway just because I haven't had time to get any gin yet, and don't want them to go off before I'm ready to make it.
