chickanne
After 15 months of no fuss feeding I'm finding pieces of the chopped branch in their grub. The Grub is in the usual place, the layers pellets are out of a bag I've been using for a while and the chipped branches are the homemade ones I put in their pen this time last year. The chippings do not look like they have been s"Ooops, word censored!"ed up in a fit of fancy footwork as there are no little pieces or dirt - just big bits. The only odd behaviour I have observed (once) was Thelma having a pre-lay stomp and moan where she seemed to be picking up pieces of bark and throwing them over her back. None went into the Grub on that occasion. Has anyone got any clues as to what is going on??
surfer_chicken
My chickens pick up bits of straw before they lay and chuck them over their backs. I assumed it was to make a nest or something, so maybe it's that and it's just an accident that they land in the grub.
auntielizzie
I have hardwood chips in my run and I was finding quite a bit in the grub every day. I moved the grub up a bit higher and I haven't found any more in there since. I still don't know how they were getting it in there though
surfer_chicken
Do they dust bathe by the grub Lizzie? My girls are always getting stones in the glug by dust bathing near it
chickanne
It is dry in their run but they use their jacuzzi several yards away. definitely get the impression the bark is placed in their.
daxigirl
I seem to always be fishing bits of bark out of their feeders, grit pot and water. I think that there's actually now more bark around the garden from changing the water than there is in their run. I recon they have bark flicking contests with points awarded for amount, height & distance with a bonus for it landing in something.
chickanne
They certainly seem to think it's sport, Daxigirl. I swear they were smirking when I went out (in the rain) this afternoon and removed 10 "goals".
Alis girls
Maggie uses her water grub as a foot spa adds a bit of flavour I expect
