jellyb100
I've used this to stop the flies which has really helped. But... Can I use citronella esstial oil in their water like citricidal - is it the same thing?!
Nicola H
No they are totally different things, Citricidal is made from Grapefruit extract but i think they make Citronella from dried grasses........
Couperman
I think Citronella is different. The essential oil is made from fast growing tropical grass whereas citrocidal is made from citrus fruit extracts with anti-bacterila properties. I don't think I would add it to the water just in case it has any detrimental effects. I'm sure a super chicken will be along soon to tell you if i'm right on this one. kannie
Not sure about this, but I think citronella is an irritant: I wouldn't put it on my skin, let alone consume it. Great smell though. Citricidal is definately different: grapefruit seed extract - edible (though it tastes really bitter).
chelsea
citronella on kitchen roll in the droppings tray has worked wonders with flies! I would not put it in their water though, definitely not.

I got some of this from Morrissons. it was 2 litres for £3. - so better value than aldi (that doesnt actually seem to be all that cheap at the moment - lidl is a lot better value - says WHICH magazine!!) we also have some oil burners for the garden to burn the oil in. have to remember to put the chooks away before we light the candles
Guest
Shame theres not a Morrisons around here, I have burners in the garden too, the chickens keep away from them although mostly they are roosting by the time I want to light the burners. Guest
I wouldn't say misled - more confused! Until I got this house with the burners in the garden I'd never heard of citronella oil either -then when I read about using it for chickens I though hmmm, must be something different! I still don't have my chicken citronella though, order got misplaced. But I've been using garlic powder in their water and thats cut down the smell. Flies still abound but there is a stable 200 yards from my back fence so lots of flies anyway.
