Magso12
Poor Matilda died this morning (second loss in a month!) This leaves poor Molly all on her own. I know this is not ideal, hens need company. I need to get a second run and house set up before I introduce new chickens (I'm going to get three new girls). Will Molly get stressed if I leave her on her own for a couple of days? Any advice please? Edited December 3, 2011 by Guest

Magso12
Thanks for replying. I'm really sad at the deaths of my two chooks - they were my first hens, but I'm also quite excited about getting the new girls. So, as Molly is on her own does that mean I can just put the new girls in with her straight away?

tracyann
Sorry to hear about your loss. If you place the run next to the existing one you should be fine, just so the newbies and the old hen can see themselves, introductions should be a breeze. Gives you an excuse for morehenitis... Its quite a contagious disease... You could safely introduce three hens so you have a nice even number of four hens!!!
fluffy chick
I got a second hand rabbit hutch that I use for intros off preloved! Cheap as chips, after all you won't want it long. You may find it ok anyway as you only have one 'oldie' so the new ones won't get ganged up on. Good luck on the intros!
Magso12
Update: Got three gorgeous new POL chooks this morning. Beryl ( Skyline) Martha (Rhode Star) and Winnie (Bovans Nera). They have settled in really well, eating and drinking straight away, but Molly (the original hen) is absolutely furious with me. Lots of indignant bocking and pacing up and down. She hates being shut in the run, she is used to free ranging. She has pecked the three new girls once or twice just to let them know who's boss, but so far so good! Still very sad thinking about Matilda, but that's life with chooks!

mabelandflosmum
I have recently introduced 3new hens to my old girl, Flo, following the death of her companion of 3years. It has taken 4weeks for things to settle and Flo still gives them a peck to show who's boss. She has also gone into a huge sulk, has stopped laying, is having a massive moult and is quite nervous of me, I guess she will settle down soon!
