I adopted 3 ex-battery hens in summer 2010 and 2 became critically ill with blocked oviducts. Thankfully I came across a specialist avian vet in Knutsford, Cheshire.

 

Avian Veterinary Services is run by specialist bird vet Richard Jones and veterinary nurse, Carli Dodd.

I cannot recommend them highly enough! The care they gave to my two critically ill chooks was absolutely first class and nothing short of miraculous!

As soon as I saw the title of this post, I guessed it would be Richard and Carli. I take my poorly hens to them also, and would recommend them very highly.

It is such a relief to have an avian specialist vet nearby - my usual vet has been great in the past, but I know that she has taken advice from Richard when dealing with some of my girls, and in fact advised me to go straight to him the last time I took a poorly girl to see her.

Did you have a look at Belina's story on their website Tweety? The pictures aren't for the faint hearted but its absolutely astounding what she went through. Think Belina has pushed the boundaries of chicken medicine!

I have just read Belina's story, and am amazed that she is still alive! That was quite an operation, and it is wonderful to see the photo of her now.

Youre right- it is totally amazing she's still here with us. She was in such a terrible state when she was rescued but recovered and then pulled through that massive op. She's Belina the wonder chicken!

Knew this would be Richard and Carli. We were pointed to them when one of chooks got ill by our normal 'dog' vet and I agree it is really reassuring to know we have a specialist nearby. Sadly my chook did not make it, she had severe peritonitis, but he successfully treated Milly for Mycoplasma early last year and again recently. Also they are such likeable, down to earth people who are happy to offer advice via email or phone.
