donald
Hi I tip our wonderful postman he really is old fashioned and helps leave parcels etc whenever he can....we always know when he is on holiday(as we end up with jobs worth who would not get a tip). As we end up getting those little cards where you have to pay to collect from the local town(so extra petrol extra cost etc). He is a star, but I think if the post office changes too much and goes bust then no one will be getting a tip. Usually bottle wine/tin sweets ie about a fiver worth. Our milk lady who turns up crack dawn in all weathers..snow etc brilliant! Same as above. Farrier bottle of vin we do vegetable exchanges for eggs through the year and manure! So he is a star too and loves my old horse. Basically if they are good at their job and most of all friendly and sincere..yes they get something. Even when we were hard up we would have found something. Oh Dustmen a tin sweets as I feel more sorry for them sorting through all that sticky yukky recycling stuff(I am amazed they dont get ill)! I sound barking mad...dont I
Mrs Potts
Thanks to everyone who responded. Like Donald, I think it is probably easier to do if you have a network of people who pop up everyday and do an extra bit above and beyond, regularly - I don't think it would be so easy if I did not live in a village. I can remember in my chamber maiding days sending good wishes to everyone who left their room in a fairly tidy state (used stuff on the tea tray, litter in bins, towels in the bath) and bad wishes after people who really went to town based on the fact someone else was clearing up after them. Squiffs - I'd be very proud if my daughter's OH was studying (I think I read that somewhere about your OH?) but she balanced everything to have hens too. I hope that doesn't sound patronising, it is said with genuine admiration. Just sitting waiting for the snow to fall.

It's not too tough, chooks give me more fulfilment than new clothes or partying anyway - and it keeps me on track with my OU work
Margalot
I gave our office postie a bottle of scotch yesterday, we tip takeaway delivery people, the bin men at Christmas. I tip my hairdresser every visit. We also give delivery drivers a drink (in money terms) if they are helpful. Its just a culture that my husband has instilled in me! He works on construction sites, and seeing deliveries / drivers alright for a "drink" if they go out of their way for something is quite the norm. I aslo make sure if we are having work done anywhere on the house etc they always get tea and biscuits! Window cleaner etc. It just brightens their day. sometimes our lads can be working at a house all day and they dont even get a thank you never mind a cup of tea! I think thats a bit mean!! My daughter has been doing a paper round this year and gets £11.00 a week for a six day delivery round of 19 papers. We live in a village so the houses are quite far apart! I am hoping she gets some biscuits or a small tip, but as she is delivering at around 6.30am I dont know if they will see her!! She has given them all a Christmas card to hope they get the hint!!! Shirl
I don't tip at Christmas. Although we have lots of deliveries I'm useless with faces and don't recognise them, even though they remember me and chat
