Tipping for deliveries, Christmas and otherwise

Recommended Posts

Who do you tip, at Christmas and other times?

We give our post lady a large box of chocolates at Christmas because we have had her delivering for years and we now know her well. We always get the same DHL delivery guy, who helps us carry large packages beyond the drive, so we give him something too (we are only five foot 3 each and not very powerful). He put the Omlet WIR on the back patio for us, for example.

I always tip the pizza delivery people when we have them delivered to home, same with takeaways (same restaurant in next village). We don't eat out much!

So for me it seems to be the consistency of people I know - but is that right?

Who do you tip and what's the etiquette on it?

I don't tip anyone because I figure they're being paid already... It's not like in america where people earn less than minimum wage and are expected to make the rest up to minimum wage in tips.

If I had more disposable income, I may do it, but as it is, I rarely if ever buy a takeaway, and I pay for postage on my items, so I don't expect to have to pay twice.

Royal Mail have warned their posties against accepting large tips at Christmas anyway since the bribery act came into force.

i dont tip

if i was at home when our postie delivered then i would tip him, but coz he delivers about 11am im already in work - otherwise if i was in id tip him as he goes the extra mile with leaving my large items with a good neibour instead of sending the items to the depo

but a lady i work with does tip.......

she buys a crate of larger for the bin men

tips the postie and window cleaner

I like to tip/buy or make a prezzie for someone who wold not expect it at all but who makes a difference...

1 year it was a lady who worked in the office who always had a smile and said hello, last year it was our village road sweeper who does a great job and always waves...this year I think it will be the postman as he often finds me around the village when I have a parcel to ensure it is delivered...

I don't tip because I work F/T and don't see them and I barely survive myself with mortgage 3 cats and 12 chooks  BUT as a girl (like 13 - 16 I had a paper round and earned £1.19 per week (it was the 1970's) and was soooo grateful for my Xmas tips as it enabled me to buy my single mum something nice.

I agree with Squiffs - there's now the minimum wage - but if I had a great delivery driver or was in a small community I think I'd feel differently as there's a more personal service.

We tip the postman and the bin men who are nice people and make an effort. We always tip the paperboys because any kids that get up early in all weather to earn a bit of money deserve a treat. It's a tough little job. We intend to tip the window cleaner because he's a nice lad who is going to struggle through life, but he gets a bit muddled and we don't always see him.

Lots of people are finding things very difficult so while we can afford to I like to spread a little Christmas cheer.

I used to make biscuits for our postman but since the changes last year we've had numerous posties and some of them don't close the main farm gate  so no biscuits this year.

We don't get any other callers apart from binmen and as we've had a few fall outs with them they won't be getting anything. Our bins are right at the end of the farm drive, by the main road, and they slapped a sticker on our recycling bin recently after someone stopped in the gateway and stuffed plastic carriers and food waste in the top of our bin. Not sure whether the binmen slapped a sticker on and refused to take our recycling because we haven't tipped them in the past.......but I can live with that! I think they recruited them from Grumpy Old Men

Only been in this house since October, but the Postie is lovely, always smiles, says hello and leaves any parcels with next door or opens the side garden if I forget to lock it - then puts a note through the door. Will give him a tip this year.

The Bin man walks up our lane and collects the bins. One has already commented that I am a 'tree hugger' as the previous owners didn't recycle anything and my recycling bin is always full  They night get a lager or two...

My local garage is fantastic and are always so helpful. They rarely charge me for bits that need doing, like opil top up, or weird lights that flash on my dashboard :lol: so have bought a crate of lager and will make them mince pies again. Alcohol and food always seem to go down well at the garage....:lol:

I'll tip the postie for the first time this year.

Since DD arrived he always knocks gently on the door instead of ringing the doorbell in case she is asleep! And happy to leave stuff in our cupboard as well!

No-one else though. Only tip for exceptional service - going above and beyond. Otherwise, as others said, they are all already getting paid.

Funny, was discussing 'christmas boxes' with a friend the other day as we both remembered our parents giving something at Christmas.

I don't routinely tip for deliveries etc as I reckon that they are doing the job they are paid to, having said that I do make a point of thanking them if the service has been good. I am usually at work, so rarely see any of them anyway.

Hmmmm Miinimum Wage!!!!! How wonderful!!!

Have you tried living on it?

Yes, I do, currently.

Actually - I just checked, minimum wage is £6.08 for people over 21, I'm 22, but I'm salaried. My monthly salary (£905) divided by 4 weeks (£226.25) divided by 40 hours = £5.65. I think I'm allowed to withhold my tips.

I don't generally tip anyone at Christmas. We get so many different postmen that I wouldn't be able to work out who to tip! My parents live in a lovely village and everyone knows the postie - if it was like that here then I think I would give something, maybe some chocs or biscuits. I'd feel funny handing over money :?

The bin men are generally really friendly so perhaps if I catch them when they're coming past I might give them a box of chocs. But, then again, we get three separate bin lorries (black bag, black box and brown bags).......I'd better stock up!

I have just given the carers at the nursery and pre school two big boxes of chocolates as an extra thank you for looking after my Bogwoppits.

I used to do a Sunday paper round but didn't get a lot of tips as most people didn't realise there was a different person doing Sundays than the rest of the week (most were still in bed on a Sunday morning) :( That was a looooong time ago now!

Its a difficult one and definately down to personal choice. We have just started our own business so minimum wage would seem a luxury at the moment but I will still give a little something to people that go above and beyond what they get paid for so they know it is appreciated, even if it's a jar of homemade jam or similar that cost very little but shows a bit of thought. I know how much I have appreciated little gestures like that in the past so its nice to know you're giving something back.
