Diary for Christmas

Recommended Posts

I got a lovely diary from a relative as a Christmas present this year. People have bought me diaries before, and what usually happens is that I am full of enthusiasm, filling in phone numbers, blood group, birthday's etc. But within a month or two, I simply don't use it. By February diary entries have become few and far between. And by March or April it is lost, or simply not being used.

Many of my relatives are dedicated diary keepers and i honestly don't know how they do it. Any ideas as to how I can be a bit more dedicated to the diary than other years?

I view a personal diary as a "reflection" tool more than "to do" in advance record keeper.

One thing which did help me to focus on the days when I didn't think I had anything worthy of note was to make a deal with myself that I would at the very least, note down three things I was grateful for that day.

Another thing which may help, would be to have a time of day that you devote to it (be it 5 mins before you go to bed, or 5 minutes after your evening meal?)

Good luck, because it can be such a treasuretrove in years to come :)

I agree, there are two different sorts - diaries, which to me are reminders, to-do lists, planning and scheduling tools - and journals, which are reflective. The sort designed for the first process are rarely suitable for the second!

I don't keep a journal-type diary any more, but when I did I used a hardback book with blank pages and just wrote in it when I felt like it, not every day. The 'three things to be grateful for' is a really useful tool, especially if times are low.

As far as the planning-forward type diary goes, I use my iPhone for this but I've always used a diary of some sort, how else do you keep on top of things? :? Keep it to hand, write down appointments, useful lists, reminders and phone numbers, and it will be an essential tool.

Having said that, we recently discovered my mum's diary from 1960 - it was a tiny red Letts pocket diary, but the information contained in it is fascinating. It's a list of birthdays, doctors' and dentists' appointments, school plays, concerts, exams, but also contains very brief notes of what happened on some days. It was an eventful year in my family - some serious illness, a death and a birth (mine!) and my brother has kindly typed it up and circulated it, we've all enjoyed reading it and remembering some of the names.

I don't keep a diary but my mum always wrote something in hers every evening, we have kept them and at sometime in the future I know they will make fascinating reading.

I do keep a sort of Christmas diary each year, it records what I buy and cook each day over the holiday and who was here and what we did each day. It also keeps a plan for the cooking on the big day. It is very useful.

It is also interesting looking back at previous years :D

Reminders and appointments I now keep on my phone.

The three things to be grateful for is an interesting idea.

My mum & her friend always send each other diaries at christmas, and often my mum doesnt use the diary she receives because it 'is too nice to use'. This year's is a really beautiful diary, and she's decided to use it by writing in at least 1 thing that has been good about the day. She's keeping it in the lounge, so every evening when she's watching the t.v she can write in it - much less likely to forget that way!

So far she's written in things like "emily made hot chocolate alice-in-wonderland- style, was fab!" or "had glass of madeira wine before tea - schlurp!". So, they don't have to be massive things, just little things that made her smile during the day :D
