Buying a small car - Opinions please...

Recommended Posts

Yeah I said I'm a Student living away from home but will probably ring when have sorted the car.

Ideally wanted a Golf but have found two 1.6l VW Polo's which I really like the look of - one is a '99 plate and its opposite my old house! :P

1 owner with nearly 80,000 miles and MOT 'til Dec so thats not too bad :D

Lots on AutoTrader have 120,000 miles and reviews of VW seem more reliable than the 25's.

Rang both of the owners and can go and have a look at them tomorrow. The cars are more expensive but the insurance is cheaper so it balances out to similar price as the 25 8)

Don't be put off high mileage on a VW if it's a diesel. My T-reg Sharan TDI has done almost 200k miles and sailed through it's MOT last week. A friend is a taxi driver, her Passat has done just over 500k  I'd be over the moon to get to 300k let alone 500k

Mr Griffins convertable Golf would've gone on forever too had it not been for the fact I made him sell it for a more family friendly car. He may never forgive me......

I'm a big fan of VW's. You do pay a bit more for them though than equivalent size cars on the market. We had an S Reg Golf for about 5 years (1.6l petrol) and it was a great car. OH's sister bought it from us a couple of years ago and it has just flown through it's MOT again. We have a VW Bora now, needed the boot space! OH's mum has run Polos for years and found them to be very solid and reliable.

It's worth remembering that slightly less desirable cars e.g. Skodas have the same running gear as a VW and are usually a bit cheaper.

My brother had a Ka for years. He is nearly 6 foot tall and is very broad and he fit in no problems. He reckoned it was a great little car, though very basic. You have to watch out for rust/rot around the wheel arches and especially around where the rear wiper is, they are particularly prone in these areas.

Good luck! (I'm currently considering a Berlingo as our next car!)
