is keeping a cockerel a lot of bother

Recommended Posts

My take is that you don't know what you've got till you've got it  We took in 10 month old rescue cockeral who went in a pen of 2-4 year old maiden ladies who really didn't know what had hit them  However, he fell in love with Top Hen, and turned out to be the best boy you could ever want in terms of being gentle with us all the time. He was no extra work in the pen, although we did have bloody combs on the odd occasion he got too excited and as they were all heavy LF the girls did wear saddles to protect their backs. It was fascinating watching the flock function as a whole, I suddenly realised this was what it was supposed to be like.

However, there was a massive downside - the noise. My lad only crowed in the morning, but early, and then once in the afternoon. But he was very very loud. Most neighbours welcomed the sound of the country (I'm semi-rural) but one neighbour complained, and it only takes one person to change things. And of course its completely understandable, and you can do nothing about it. I had to rehouse this group of birds about 200ft away from the rest and it took away some of the pleasure for me.

My lad died on Boxing Day and I miss him dreadfully. But I haven't replaced him partly because of the noise/neighbour issue. If you live in the country or your cockeral is a quieter breed/individual this might not be a problem. I wouldn't have missed this experience for anything, but I do know we were lucky. If you do take a cockeral on, its a risk, and if it doesn't work out then it will be very hard to rehome him again unless you are lucky. I can't say don't do it, we saved a boy from despatch and he enriched our lives hugely, but its not workable in all situations. I guess I'm saying think of a Plan B just in case.
