late bank holiday & school exams

Recommended Posts

Any teachers out there? With the late, extended bank holiday (June not May) this year - has it had an impact on external examinations?

DD has AS level exams, which we thought were June (from initial school info), but they haven't been given any information from school so I checked out online with the award boards - it looks like she has 9 exams between 16th & 31st May - none in June - the timetables online are even headed 'June timetable'!!

The bank holidays all take place over the half term break (I think) so there will be no impact on the external exams. You can look up the individual modules on the examboards website or on the DfE website.

I understand that - prehaps I didn't explain myself very well - we thoguht (from information from the school) the exams would be in June, but the June double bank holidays for the jublilee in place of normal May bank holiday obviously means there are less exam dates available in June - as halfterm is now in June, not May.

I had looked up all the exams online tonight before posting on here - hence discovering all her AS exams are in May - none in June! Just wondered if this was normal for AS exams or if they are earlier, due to the later halfterm/Bank Holidays.

I think it is due to the extra bank holiday. At my school we site mainly IGCSEs and some of the timetabling for their exams has left many of our GCSE boys with 9.5 hours of exams in 1.5 days. I know that doesn't sound so bad said like that but in fact they have two am clashes adding up to 3.5 hours, followed by two pm clashes adding up to 4 hours followed by 2 hours of Maths the next morning. A logistical nightmare for the exams officer and not ideal in any way, shape or form for the boys. It seems that most of our exams are before halfterm. Usually we do not expect the yr 12s back until mid June after study leave.

Thanks - she starts with am & pm exams for the first three days, then along weekend followed by a further 4 exams bunched together - all over with before halfterm! I guess it means halfterm can actually be a break for a change this year.

To me the thought of am Maths, pm English lit, then Physics, general studies the next day with maths again the next day sounds awful! The second week of two lots of geography, then more physics, maths & general studies exams is also not my idea of fun.

It certainly isn't. Sounds quite a lot like my time table last year! I had at least one exam everyday for the week before half term. Safe to say the general studies exam in the middle of my science exams didn't get revised for :anxious: At least she can relax at half term, most of my friends had at least a couple more exams afterwards.

I'm hoping they'll be more spread out this year but I daren't look :?
