Weather/Water proofing a WIR

Recommended Posts

We've got an Omlet WIR but i think what we do would work with anything. We use transparent tarpaulins from Tarpaflex, held on with bungees. We have a large 2m x 6m one that goes over the top and down two sides and small ones across the back and front. We can roll the sides up to let air etc in if it is dry. Gegging the bottom edges out at a slight angle helps the rain rundown and away from the edges.

On my run I've got pvc sheets screwed to 2/3 of the south west side with a removable panel for the last bit so they get flow of air in summer.

On two other sides I use clear tarpaulin from Tarpaflexand roll it up and down as needed.

The third is trees so sheltered. The tarpaulin is held on cup hooks and I cut it up to make panel size widths and put extra holes in using repair kit. I also run a bungee across when its down. Hardly had to use them this year with few easterly wind days :D

I have just had my WIR built and had a few bad days of rain - I've also just got a corrugated roof on mine however one long side is protected by our garden fences.

Ive found that as a short term solution (until the Tarpaflex come back in stock again) that the eglu shades have done us well - yes they are coloured and look a mess as they are all different shapes/sizes/colours but at least it keeps the rain off of the girls - and the easibed!!!!

I just make sure that the majority of the run is covered from what anlge the rain/wind is coming from and it seems to do the job - HOWEVER I do now realise that I need some guttering as the drips fly back into the run!

Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks everyone. I ordered from Tarpaflex as everyone seems to recommend. 1 question :?: the sides of my WIR are 10ft X 14ft so I ordered 2 X 10ft & 2 X 15ft. When I put it over the door side I will need to cut out the door shape....have you reinforced this with anything? I was thinking of stapling the sheet onto the door and using duck tape to reinforce the edges of the shape I've just cut out. Would this owrk or is there some 'special' stuff I would need to buy?

I cut mine into panels and folded it back on itself and used clear duck tape to stick it. Some I sewed with my sewing machine but took pity on it. There probably is special stuff.

I take mine on and off so haven't stapled. You may find it tears at the staples if its windy :?

Sorry if this is a bit late to be helpful but I ditched the Tarpaflex tarpaulin after a year or so as it all just got ripped to shreds (I do have a very windy garden though).

I now use acrylic panels from Trent Plastics which, so far, are working like a dream 8) . They get dusty too but are easier to wash down. Not a cheap option but the glass clear tarpaulin isn't cheap either and didn't last :? .

Thanks all. As I have now bought the Tarpaulin I will use it for this year and see how I go. Will definitely look into Trent plastics. I'm sure it was one of your threads ANH that I saw previously. Once the run is up I can measure and start ordering and get ready for when the Tarpaulin is in shreds. If I remember rightly when they are cut it's a pretty good fit to the 'mm'.
