Kenwood ice cream maker vs bowl attachment

Recommended Posts

The right answer for you may depend on what you are picturing when you picture an ice cream machine: are you thinking of an ice cream machine where you still need to freeze the bowl first? Or are your thinking of an ice cream maker which includes a refrigeration unit?

If you are thinking of the one where you still need to put the bowl in the freezer, then tbh your Kenwood will probably be as good.

I had one of the freeze-nbowl machines, but I never had the bowl in the freezer when I wanted ice cream. So I started keeping a bowl in the freezer just in case, but then it would take up valuable space. Eventually, I asked for a standalone machine as a combined birthday/christmas pressie (back in the days when we exchanged christmas presents, haven't done that for years now), and I have a lovely machine which is fantastic. We made loads of ice creams, gelatos, sherbets... The down side is that the machine is rather large, and i ended up putting it in a cupboard (it occupies a large part of the cupboard to itself). This means I have to get it out in order to use it and, as it is a refrigerated unit you have to be very careful how you move it, and leave it ot settle for a while before using.

It does make the most fantastic ice creams though, and is soooooo easy.

I have a Magimix Le Glacier which is the bowl that you freeze & when ready, you attach the stirrer bit. It does live in & take up space in the freezer, but I can cram bags of peas in it to save space. As it is chrome, it also makes a cool ice bucket when needed. Actually, I'm a bit  as I don't remember using it last summer at all :anxious:

I think in both cases the bowls have to go in the freezer. There is a difference in price of £10 with the maker being cheaper than the attachment  I would have thought it would have been the other way around. I know these machines are not used much (I do have a selection of machines that come out for a while then go back in the cupboard  ) and you seem to be able to pick them up on ebay. I think DD and YS may quite like to use it. I suppose you could plan to make the ice cream and then keep it in the freezer for when the notion takes you

DD would like to make frozen yogurt. I assume these can do make that too :?

I recently got a new ice cream maker for the summer months (cheaper and healthier for the kids) with an inbuilt refrigeration unit, as I can be a little lazy in the kitchen it makes things rather easy not having to do much. But I know someone who makes it from scratch and they said that was their prefered method (she was the person I got inspiration to buy the machine after tasting the ice cream - delicious)
