Shelley
My three gingernuts are laying fairly irregularly now, but when they do the eggs are almost always so thinned shelled that they break immediately - at least four or five a week I'd say. They only free-range at weekends now, though they're in a big run, and they don't touch the grit I leave out for them. Is that the likely cause? Is there any supplement I can give them? LolaLayla
I had this problem a while back too. Mine ate layers pellets had access to grit and free ranged but I don't think it was enough. Following advice I now put some limestone flour, grit and oyster shell in with their layers pellets. I also keep the girls shells and bake the in the bottom of the oven when I have something else cooking. I then crush them up and add to the grub too. I have not had a problem since (crossed fingers). Hope this helps.
clucker1
I too had this problem. I now give them oyster shell mixed with their pellets along with cod liver oil, the latter about once a week. I also mix in oyster shell with their treats about once a week as they are good at leaving the oyster shell at the bottom of their grub...like naughty children not eating their greens! Miss Millies Chicken
clucker1 How much cod liver oil do you add to their feed
clucker1
I give them a splodge! Very technical, but around 1 dessert spoonful between 6 chickens once a week. Not sure if this is too much or too little but it works! I started off stirring it in their pellets...then one day I had one of the chickens sipping it out of the lid of the bottle. So, now I just mix it in with their treats....a lot easier!
Miss Millies Chicken
Great, I have some cod liver oil lurking in the back of the cupboard. I'll start them with perhaps a teaspoon tomorrow betwen five of them and see how it goes. If they dont turn up there beaks at it I gradually increase the amount until it becomes a splodge
