Clicker training

Recommended Posts

I was talking to LillyBettyBabs about clicker training at the weekend and thought that I'd post this video that comes from a member of Lurcher Link as it shows how clicker training can really work with nervous dogs. I have tried it with Ruby, but she hates the sound of the clicker and finds it really unsettling. :? Cyrus is just too thick and doesn't get it at all

I'm a big proponent of clicker training - my dog is now 4 and everything I have taught him, behaviour and tricks is clicker trained. Its a fast and precise way of training and fun for the dog. You don't need the clicker for ever - it is only for training new behaviours - once they've got it under their belt you can dispense with it unless you want to refine the behaviour in anyway - then go back to it.

If you want to take a peek at his tricks - just search 'jasperaliceuk' on You Tube. I've even had a go at clicker training Mimi the chicken - when it gets a bit warmer I'm going to see what else I can teach her.

BTW re. the loudness of the clicker - some dogs do seem to be sound sensitive. Firstly you can use something like the clicker on a ball point pen, tape up the box clicker with some fabric plaster or, in my case, I prefer to use an I-clicker from Karen Pryor - saves my fingernails too!

Off to take a look at the lurcher video!

Me neither, I was quite relieved when Ruby took exception to it. It's just another piece of kit to carry around too.

I had wondered about clicker training Tango, but the dog trainer at the classes we took her to said the same as you - it's another bit of kit to carry around. He suggested using a click word instead (could even be 'click' if it makes it easy to remember) - we use 'good'. Hands free and always got it with you!
