A breeding trio of Thuringians happen to find themselves coming home with me from the Reading show I mainly bought them for the cock who is a beautiful boy but absolutely terrified of everything. I am assuming that they have had little handling so have put the girls down the garden in a seperate run so that they can learn from my current crew that I am not an axe murderer.

However, I have kept my boy in a very large dog cage in the conservatory as I want him to get used to me and to being handled. He is also a potential show bird so I really don't want him to be going into heart failure when anyone goes near him

Am I doing the right thing, I talk to him all the time and have given him a few cuddles but have stopped this as he goes crazy every time I go near the cage and I am scared he will hurt himself. The only thing that did not seem to scare him was the Dyson, which sends my dog and cats running for the door

Is it worth trying some Rescue Remedy or any other tips gratefully received. I want to get this right from the outset as do not want an aggressive boy.

I'm sure I must have seen your newbies Wendy...not that we visited the sales pens very often at the weekend

 

Personally, I'd have left the 3 together for the first week or so at least......they'd all get used to you together & maybe having the girls would distract him from having the screaming abdabs every time you go near him.....obviously I have no experience of showbirds & their training, just thinking aloud really......

I'd leave him with his girls too. He is probably concerned about them and that is why he won't respond to you. Best to reunite them and then if he is aggressively protecting them, get him used to you bringing treats,( so you are A GOOD THING) then if he is still aggressive, pick him up and carry him around with you.

My lot that havent been handled much gradually get put in smaller and smaller groups in pens and handled more then bought indoors (stable/shed) individually later on

 

If you dont want to put him back with the others then I'd maybe move him to a shed in his cage and visit him a few times a day putting your hand in the cage to feed him then move on to stroking him

 

Being in the house with the warmth and comings and goings is perhaps a bit overwhelming for him

I was not going to even look and had dismissed this trio as I am in contact with the German club about getting some eggs from over there as the birds are stunning.

I separated them yesterday afternoon as the girls were being affected by him and going into fits as well. They are a great deal calmer now and happy sunbathing. Maybe I ought to put him down with them for a while until he has settled and then try the charm offensive.

Off to do a bit of house rearranging

I'm going to put him in a pen back with his girls in the garden for now as you have advised.They are very young and not laying yet but I would like to see if he can be friendly with my existing girl as she is in full lay at the moment.

Slightly off post I know, but any chance of a pix of your Thuringians? I've only seen one picture in a book and they looked just stunning. Very sad I did not see them at the show as I'd have loved to see them 'in the feather' so to speak.
