Lesley
I'm making fragranced beads - a recipe from a book called The Fragrant Pharmacy by Valerie Ann Worwood. You make a paste from ground gums and resins and add essential oils and fresh ground spices - I used geranium and rose - they look like Maltesers.....and smell like Turkish Delight! They have to dry on a tray....but that is making them flat on the bottom. I've turned them over a few times so I hope they'll be an even shape once dry. I'll see how they progress........I think I'll make some cream felted beads with silk threads and seed beads to go with them
Plum
How will you use them Lesley? Is it like a fancy potpourri thing.
Lesley
It says you use them as beads and the heat from your skin releases the warm spicy fragrance........it sounded so odd I just had to try them

The Dogmother
Could you use them to fragrance clothes in drawers?
freddie
they can be made from rose petals;the smell apparently is lovely. No, I haven't, yes I'd love to....
Lesley
I don't know how they'll be when they dry Clare, I did think about using them in drawers. I had them on a white tray and had to move them onto some baking parchment as I thought I'd end up with a polka dot patterned tray! You could end up with some very dodgy looking underwear Plum, I'd be worried about wearing them in the rain! Freddie - just rose petals or with the gums and resins as well? The beads feel very sticky still - I've put them in the conservatory to cook....or freeze more likely tonight!

Groovychook
I have a copy of the Fragrant Pharmacy and I can't remember reading about those... how interesting! Scented drawer beads is a lovely idea. I'm off to dig out my copy!
Lesley
I had a cutting from a years old newspaper stating that it was from the book....... I had a look on Amazon and used the Search Inside facility but didn't see it. I ordered a second hand copy of the book for £1.76 because there were lots of other interesting recipes. Groovychook
It's a really interesting book Lesley. It has lots of recipes for home made toiletries- I made quite a few things out of there when I first got it. I'm so glad you mentioned it- it's encouraged me to have another play! I've just found my copy and the recipes for scented beads is in there
Plum
Perhaps you need to wear them on a chain in the shower like soap on a roap. Wish we had smell on Omlet
Lesley
They do smell divine - but I love the smell of cinnamon and cloves anyway and then added two oils I love as well. My book turned up today and it has soooo much in it!! The beads are in the book as you found Groovychook - in the presents section. Update - I think I was supposed to make small beads and not Malteser sized ones like I did, they have flattened while drying so I keep turning them over so that they flatten on both sides. I have made the holes using a darning needle and they're drying quite well in the conservatory, but I think they'll take some time to be properly dry. The Dogmother
I wonder if you could make them scented with cedar oil to keep moths away? Then they could go in drawers or a wardrobe in a small, open container.

Lesley
I forgot all about these beads as I'd put them in the conservatory I found them today and I'm not really impressed - it was rather hot in there and they looked and felt like jelly sweets they're slightly sticky but perhaps they'll be ebtter when they cool down. At the moment they are a fairly expensive waste of time
